About the Laboratory

Description and Goals of the laboratory

The "Laboratory of Biomedical Technology and Digital Health" , covers the research and teaching needs in the field of biomedical technology and its applications, especially in the scientific fields of biomechanics, biorheology-clinical hemorheology, clinical engineering, medical imaging-biosignal and image processing, biosensors, telematics, medical informatics, neural networks, neurosciences, radiation-tissue interactions, ultrasound technology, virtual/augmented/mixed reality and rehabilitation technology, robotics and automation.

It was established with the Government Gazette 218/3-02-2020 Issue B’ “Establishment of a Laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the University of Western Macedonia entitled “Laboratory of Biomedical Technology and Digital Health”. In the Government Gazette 2315/15-6-2020 Issue B’, an Amendment was made to articles 4 and 8.

The following units are organized and operate in the laboratory:

A. Software development and implementation unit for medical informatics applications
B. Digital Medical Image/Biosignal Processing Unit
C. Molecular, Genomic and Protein Data Management Unit

with object:

1) The development of medical data management systems with Internet/Intranet technologies

2) Software development and implementation of medical informatics applications.

3) The development of original algorithms for the theoretical prediction of protein structures that can be used in drug design using combinatorial optimization algorithms.

4) Telematics applications in the healthcare sector

5) Modeling and design of metabolic and transmission biological networks.

6) Management of molecular, genetic and protein data.

7) Simulations at the cellular level.

8) Digital medical image/biosignal processing.

The laboratory aims to:

  1. To cover, at the undergraduate level, the research needs of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as other Departments of the University of Western Macedonia, in topics that fall within the fields of study of the Laboratory, as specified in article 1 of this article.
  2. Collaboration of all kinds with research centers and academic institutions at home and abroad, as long as the scientific objectives coincide and complement those of the laboratory.
  3. The organization of scientific lectures, workshops, seminars, symposia, conferences and other scientific events, the production of publications and editions and the invitation of recognized Greek and foreign scientists.
  4. Conducting research in Biomedical Technology, with an emphasis on software development and the implementation of medical informatics applications.
  5. The provision of services to individuals as provided for in Presidential Decree 159/1984 "Conditions for the provision of services by University laboratories to individuals and organizations of any legal form" (A' 53).
  6. The existence and maintenance of a website, on which the results of the research and other activities of the members of the Laboratory and other related Departments of the University of Western Macedonia, the country's HEIs and Higher Education Institutions abroad are published.
  7. The connection of the Laboratory with productive sectors and actors of society and the economy with the aim of promoting its broader scientific goals and giving back to society. 8. The support of the research of doctoral and postdoctoral candidates in the areas of activity of the Laboratory.
  8. The implementation of research and development programs in all relevant fields of their scientific area, independently or in collaboration with other Laboratories, faculty members, or Schools of the University of Western Macedonia or other educational, scientific, or research institutions as well as public and private bodies and organizations at home and abroad.

The laboratory supports the undergraduate courses “Biomedical Technology”, “Electronic Health” and “Bioinformatics” of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences and the postgraduate courses “Bioinformatics”, “Biomedical Signal & Image Processing & Modeling”, “Bio-Statistics/Big data analysis”, “3D Bioprinting”, “Bio-Sensors & Advanced Biomedical Signals”, “Digital Therapeutics” of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering.
